Continuing on from my last post, I'm doing this mini series on my design choices for The Spanish House. This time focusing on the bedroom.

As a designer, I love working with nature, using colours and textures inspired by the environment around the property. This bedroom at The Spanish House gave me the perfect opportunity to do just that.

The space is north-facing, which means minimal natural light—and a lot of orange pine left over from the property’s original style (fondly nicknamed "The Pine Palace”). Here’s how I tackled it:

The Colour Palette: Inspired by the olive trees and cacti outside, I chose a deep olive green for the walls. Not only does it ground the room in its surroundings, but it also works beautifully with the low light, making the space feel cool and inviting—even when it’s 40°C outside.

Working with Pine: Instead of fighting the orange tones, I used the colour wheel to find a complementary shade that neutralises it. The green walls blend the pine into the design, transforming it from a feature that stood out for the wrong reasons into one that harmonises with the space.

Biophilic Design in Action: This room is a perfect example of how bringing the outside in—through colour and texture—can create a calming, cohesive retreat that connects to its environment.

Ever notice how the smallest kitchen still has to handle all the essentials—especially in a holiday let? That’s exactly the puzzle we faced at The Spanish House, where the kitchen is under 2m wide!!

A holiday let needs to stand out on booking platforms and still be practical enough to handle constant guest turnover —no easy feat. With minimal worktop space, we couldn’t just pile coffee makers and teabags all over the counters (guests need their morning brew, but not at the expense of a neat, welcoming kitchen).

Our solution? A compact caddy on wheels with a tiled top that stays right beside the kitchen. It keeps the counters clear and ensures guests have easy access to tea, coffee, and anything else they fancy. Less clutter, more functionality—problem solved.

Omg the definition of a BUSY day today!

Had such a nice walk through a gorgeous 1930s Art Deco National Trust house today, called Portland House in Weymouth. It's just so stunning and the views are insane, I highly recommend a visit if you're in Weymouth this weekend. They also rent it out for guest stays!

Getting busy with projects that need wrapping up before the end of the year, but managed to sneak in a sea swim, and install my new bedroom curtains, and I am LOVING the Mediterranean linen vibes.

Week 3 of The Interior Design Workshop!

This week was all about creating experiences through interior design. And that involves engaging all of our five senses.

The best interior spaces tap into each of our senses and it just feels like you're in the right place. And our homes should do this for us.

No one wants to walk into their home and smell the kitchen bin, or hear the sound of the washing machine while you're trying to watch TV in the living room and you definitely don't want that bright big light on when you're entertaining friends!!!

Next week we'll be diving into colour psychology and learning how to be brave with colour, patterns and fabrics, it's going to be a fun one :)))

Off the back of my stories this morning where I talked about how our clothes can tell the story of our interior style, I put together a quick reel of how I created my textured bedroom wall.

I did this in peak 2020 lockdown, so had access to very limited supplies. I collected all my sample pots and just had a go and I cannot tell you how much I loveee the results. Of course in an ideal world I would have used limewash paint but isn't it fun to just have a go with what we have available to us. What's the worst that can happen?!

Moodboard Magic happened this evening during Week Two of my 6 Week Interior Design Workshop.

It was so much fun going through the magazines and watching everyone's true sense of style come through on their moodboards. This is such a useful tool if you're unsure of what you like, or how to bring it altogether in your mind. Putting it all down on paper helps you clearly identify your 'red thread'.

In essence you can clearly see what sort of patterns you like, what shapes you like, what colours you like. What was so great to see was how unique everyone's boards were but also what a true reflection of self it was too!

Interior design isn't just what's in magazines, or on Pinterest or what's trending, it's a reflection of you and how you want to feel in a space and the story you want to tell.

The Loft, one of our luxury short term rentals, underwent a budget-friendly renovation last year. Previously an underperforming @airbnb it wasn’t reaching its full potential in nightly rates.

Honestly, the quickest and most cost effective way to inject some personality into your holiday lets and make an impact on your potential guests is PAINT!

Here's some quick turnaround suggestions
- paint the ceiling, I'm looking at you, you high ceiling Georgian beauts 😍
- paint the skirting board
- paint a 'dado' rail 1/3 of the wall up
- colour drench your walls, ceiling and skirting board
- colour block
- paint the window frame and sill, I suggest pulling a colour from the view out of the window, i.e sea view, paint the frame a gorgeous aqua

These simple paint hacks will make you stand out when your potential guests are scrolling through @airbnb and @bookingcom looking for the perfect holiday property.

You have to stand out now more than ever. The industry is changing and you're going to want to stay ahead of the curve. The summers are great, but the winters are LONGGGG, especially in seasonal seaside towns.

One of the longest transformations ever!!! But who doesn't love a happily ever after!?

The shower room in this guest property was initially completed in 2020 with a microcement finish. But it was very badly bodged. I could go into it but I would need to write an essay and life's too short.

So then 2023 I had the bathroom re done, by another builder and this time I tiled it. Took ages deliberating tile shape and layout 👋🏼 hi yep, of course that was me, typical interior designer deliberately over the EXACT shade of grout and the PERFECT wood effect tile 😅

Buttt it's done and it looks fabulous and I'm just glad that I hopefully won't need to have this redone again in 3 years time (pretty please no🤞🏼)

From a sketch on paper to completed!
This is the ensuite for the guest room we rent out on @airbnb . I had a really clear vision of what I wanted our guests to experience when in this space. I wanted to create a Bali Zen feeling, like you were showering in a tropical jungle location. Texture was key here and I fell in love with these tumbled and sandblasted marble tiles. I then put them with the wood effect floor tiles, marble sink, textured shower tray and limewash effect paint on the walls.

The mixture of textures is just 👌

Room Refresh Completion

One of our lovely clients approached us, needing a guiding hand with a colour scheme and bedroom layout. After a really good discussion and an understanding of their needs, I put together a Room Refresh which helped identify the best location for the bed, which meant that they could have slow mornings in bed with a cup of tea and enjoy the morning sun pouring in. We talked about best lighting placement, taking into account limited space each side of the bed and opted for wall lights which meant more space for other items like books and cups of tea. We also discussed storage and I designed a wall of cabinetry that blends in seamlessly to the space while maximising storage.

I have this thing with texture. I'm all about texture and tone. I mean, I love designing with patterns and prints, but at heart I'm all about that texture and tone.
I love to lean into nature, take inspiration from what I can see outside of the window and bring that into every space. After all Mother Nature does it best, so why not borrow from her.

After doing my talk on productivity and interior design for @the.vibclub last month, I realised that I really needed to practice what I preach and up my own WFH office game. So I decided to treat myself to a proper desk chair rather than the backless dressing table stool I was using!

No.1 question I get asked...what's on trend at the moment? And my answer is always the same...don't decorate for anyone else!!
Don't decorate for a trend, don't decorate for the next person who will live in this space, don't decorate for resale value (** I'll caveat that one for a future post), don't decorate for me, decorate for you!
You're the one who will be in this space every day, this is your haven, and it needs to make you feel good and happy. And what works for one person won't work for you...it's entirely subjective and completely personal.
And my job is to understand what makes you tick, what makes you happy, what makes you feel good, understand how you will live in that space and then bring that vision to life!

POV: Day in the life of...me, the wearer of many hats!

Had such an awesome week so far. Got the keys to our new BTL, connected with some amazing women @the.vibclub this morning in my talk on interior design and productivity. I then spent some time learning some amazing marketing advice from Katie @theholidayhive for @oliveandwildestays. Put some final touches in The Old Bakehouse to welcome our new guests. Met some friends for coffee and spent some time making sure I've nailed my target guests/clients. And the sun has shown her face so I would say that's a pretty successful day.
